Senate District 36

District 36 (1)_edited.jpg

Senate District 36 resides entirely within Fairfax County in Northern Virginia, and stretches roughly from Chantilly in the North, to Clifton in the South, and Fair Oaks in the East, to Centreville and the county border in the West.

Located in the heart of Northern Virginia, District 36 is home to roughly 209,562 people and covers about 95.1 square miles, with a population density of approximately 2,203.8 persons per square mile.

The median age sits at about 39.1 years, almost identical to both the Virginia and U.S. averages—so it’s a community of all ages, neither especially young nor especially old.

The “per-capita income” is approximately $69,044, which is around 1.4 times the Virginia average and about 1.6 times the national average.

Education and cultural diversity are standout features here. A remarkable 95.3% of adults have completed high school or higher, and a strong 65.6% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. District 36 has evolved significantly over time, reflecting Northern Virginia’s rapid growth and demographic change.

Looking at elected representation, for much of the late 20th and early 21st century the district was held by leaders such as Linda Todd “Toddy” Puller, who served from 2000 until 2016 representing a version of District 36 that included parts of Fairfax, Prince William, and Stafford counties. In the 2023 Democratic primary for District 36, Stella Pekarsky defeated longtime incumbent George L. Barker to become the Democratic nominee.
