Reston, VA – Today, Virginia State Senator Stella Pekarsky (D- Fairfax County) announced her support for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision if elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Big money has far too much influence in our politics—and working families are paying the price,” said Pekarsky. “The Citizens United decision opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending in our elections, drowning out the voices of everyday Americans. I’m running for Congress to change that.”
As a Member of Congress, Pekarsky will cosponsor the Democracy For All Amendment to overturn Citizens United, restore the authority of Congress and the states to regulate campaign finance, and pass robust reforms that increase transparency and level the playing field.
“As Democrats, we have a moral imperative to reject dark money in this primary election.” Pekarsky continued. “When corporate Democrats put our democracy up for sale, they’re doing Donald Trump’s bidding for him.”
A former educator and the daughter of working-class immigrants, Pekarsky has built a career standing up to powerful interests and fighting for fairness, transparency, and accountability in government. As a State Senator, she stood up to corporate influence in Richmond, championed landmark legislation to hold corporate price-gougers accountable, and delivered on putting more money in the pockets of working Virginians.
